When talking about digitalization and successful companies, there is no way around mentioning China in the same breath, anymore. Tech giants like Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent (BAT) are influencing the development of other markets and western companies strongly. In attempts to hop onto this extreme growth, many companies have tried to establish in the Chinese market – and failed miserably.

As there are so many economical and cultural differences, the value of market knowledge cannot be overestimated in the endeavour of entering China, the world’s second largest economy by nominal GDP, with a foreign business. Especially the e-commerce sector is way further developed than in the West. Hence, this first of a series of three whitepapers aims to shed light onto the history, the consumers and the chances the market offers, to be followed by a description of obstacles and how to overcome them.
