For years the press has been predicting the retail apocalypse. However, steadily growing sales, store openings exceeding closings and the great success of innovative retail concepts tell a different story. Even in times of omnipresent and almost unlimited online offerings physical retail remains relevant. Last year we demonstrated within our New Retail Report 2018 that sustainable growth in brick and mortar requires that the role of retail is radically redefined.
We need revolutionized concepts that go beyond the implementation of digital solutions and multi-channel strategies. The questions we need to ask are: What drives today’s consumers into the stores? And what are the factors that retail can use in synergy with online and omnichannel retailing to make a visit to physical retail valuable and relevant in the eyes of the consumer?
In cooperation with the retail systems specialist Visplay we developed the New Retail Report 2019 that aims at providing insights into the latest developments in retail. It indicates the symbiosis of Big Data and the human core, the need for an operating system to scale, key drivers of relevance as well as the two major challenges for a significant change in retail.
