FERNRIDE
Cybersecurity Testing on Autnomous Vehincles for Fernride
Our story
01
The Challenge
FERNRIDE, the European leader in automation solutions for yard and port logistics, aimed to ensure its vehicle systems fulfilled the cybersecurity requirements defined under IEC 62443. The key challenges included a distributed architecture with multiple embedded endpoints communicating over Ethernet-based networks.
The project required validation of the system's resilience against both external and internal attack vectors. Additionally, there was a compressed development timeline requiring quick integration of security testing without impacting overall delivery. A deep technical understanding of security layers within an automotive-like industrial system was also essential.
02
Our Solution
Diconium was brought in for its proven automotive security engineering capabilities across endpoint and network domains. The approach included a comprehensive security assessment structured around three key areas.
We performed endpoint security testing to identify security critical design and implementation weaknesses in device systems. This was complemented by network security testing that focused on communication protocols. The third component was specialized toolchain & automation solutions that enhanced testing efficiency and coverage across the entire platform. In addition, we implemented cybersecurity testing campaigns using a scalable and efficient in-house automation suite, D/ACE, resulting in comprehensive test documentation and reports.
03
Successes
The outcome demonstrated the impact of deep system understanding and applied security testing expertise. Several weaknesses with high security risks were identified and mitigated early in the lifecycle.
Rapid onboarding was achieved with the definition and execution of first security test plans as part of the development lifecycle within just 3 weeks. Introduction of approximately 100 automated tests (including all sub-systems & test variations) via the in-house automation suite, D/ACE. Strong technical collaboration with the customer team enabled real-time fixes and faster resolution cycles.
The project contributed directly to the successful release of a security-hardened autonomous truck platform, ready for deployment.
